Quin-Mo-Lac’s Behaviour Management Plan

Part A - Parents & Campers

Before you come to Camp

Fill out the QML Camper Behaviour Questionnaire honestly. This is helpful to arrange the best placement for your child and allows us to put together our staff teams more effectively. Please take the time to help us get to know your child and indicate effective strategies that work for your family.

Have a chat with your camper to outline any expectations that you have for their time at camp and carefully review the camp’s expectations, below, so that everyone is clear about what behaviours are not acceptable at Quin-Mo-Lac.

Behavior Expectations

All Quin-Mo-Lac campers and counsellors will be expected to adhere to our Behaviour Expectations and will:

    1.    Treat other members of the camp community with respect.

    2.    Respect other people's privacy and personal space.

    3.    Abide by all of the rules, standards and expectations.

    4.    Participate in the life of the camp in a manner that is positive and open.

    5.    Not discriminate or offend another person in any way.

    6.    Respect the Christian philosophy and ethos of the camp.

    7.     Respect the supervision boundaries identified by the camp staff.

    8.    Not use language that is offensive to another person's gender, sexual orientation, race or religious affiliation.

    9.    Not participate in sexual conduct at camp.

    10.    Respect our Technology Policy and not bring technological devices to camp.

    11.    Respect our Prohibited Items Policy and not bring alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, vapes or weapons to camp.

    12.     Communicate any of the identified behaviours to Counsellors or Directors.

Part B – Quin-Mo-Lac Staff

Before You Arrive at Camp

All counsellors and staff receive specific training to address risk management, conflict resolution, understanding behaviour and child development.   The information provided on each Child Behaviour Questionnaire helps the camp staff select the best available counselling team to usher each child through a positive camp experience.  Senior staff will have an opportunity to review the behaviour forms ahead of the campers’ arrival.  Individual Child Behaviour Questionnaires are otherwise kept confidential in the camp office but can be accessed if necessary.

Quin-Mo-Lac Staff -  When Your Child Arrives at Camp

During registration, guardians will have an opportunity to let us know they would like to update their Child Behaviour Questionnaire or have a private discussion with the Resource Director, Assistant Directors, Director, Counsellors, First Aider or Office Administrator.  The Resource Director is available to provide campers and their counsellors with individual attention and can communicate with parents throughout the week.

Along with ice breakers, name games and safety procedures, the Counsellors will address the group at the beginning of the week to remind them of our behaviour expectations.

At our opening night campfire program, the Camp Director welcomes each new group of campers by introducing himself and explains how “…Quin-Mo-Lac works best, when we are respectful of each other. Be kind to each other and feel free to communicate with the counsellors, Resource Director, Assistant Directors, Director or Chaplains.”

Quin-Mo-Lac Staff – Once the Week is Underway at Camp

Each camper group has one Staff Counsellor and two Volunteer Counsellors.  The Staff Counsellor is responsible for knowing the overall dynamic of their group and keeps the Resource Director updated on their progress throughout the week.  The Resource Director visits each group daily to get an update on the camper dynamics.  Notes are recorded and any immediate advice is provided and discussed.  Any necessary and urgent decisions may be made at that time and Accident/Incident forms may be completed as needed.

Campers who are identified by their counsellors as acting aggressively or manipulatively are reminded of our expectations and asked to stop.   Repeated disruptive behaviour will be communicated to the Resource Director for further assistance. If the behaviour is widespread in a group, the Resource Director, Assistant Directors, or Camp Director may sit down with everyone for a more formal chat/”respect talk”.

Each night, the Camp Director, Assistant Directors and Resource Director meet to discuss the dynamics of each group. This is a confidential meeting meant to monitor progress and troubleshoot any issues that arise.  Decisions will be made as to whether there is a need to contact guardians. Child Behaviour Questionnaires will be referenced for assistance.

If behaviour does not improve, contact is made with a camper’s parent/guardian to first to find out if this behaviour has been observed in the past, and secondly to determine if there are additional tips to curb the behaviour.  An opportunity can be provided for the guardian to speak to their camper over the phone or in person if requested.

If the behaviour does not improve and/or other campers in the group are being impacted, this will likely result in the camper’s removal from camp.  Please note that it is the policy of the camp that any child leaving camp early under these circumstances will not be entitled to any amount of refund.
